What is aromatherapy massage?

Aromatherapy massage is a light-to-medium pressure Swedish massage carried by an essential-oil blend chosen for the client — for example vetiver and cedarwood for an overactive mind, or lavender and chamomile for sleep. It is chosen for anxiety, overload and headaches rather than for deep muscular work. At Your Masseuse in Paddington W2 it is booked by WhatsApp, done by a single therapist, and costs £90 for 30 minutes (45 min £110, 60 min £130).

Aromatherapy massage is a Swedish framework carried by an oil blended for you at the start of the session. Vetiver and cedarwood for a mind that will not stop turning; sweet orange and rosemary when the tank is empty; lavender and chamomile for a night you need to actually sleep through. The blend goes into a warm carrier oil, and the massage does the rest.

The pressure stays light to medium. This is not the session for a locked shoulder — that is deep tissue — but it is the one for the weeks when the body is fine and the head is not. Scent reaches the nervous system faster than touch does, and the two together are what make an hour here feel longer than an hour.

I mix the blend in front of you and tell you what is in it. If you are pregnant, on medication or have a skin condition, say so when you book; several oils are not suitable and I will choose around them.

The session

How a aromatherapy session goes

  1. 01

We talk first — how you have been sleeping, what the week did to you, any scents you love or cannot stand. Then I mix the blend while you settle under a towel on the warmed table.

  2. 02

Slow Swedish strokes across the whole body, with more time on the back, shoulders and scalp than usual. The room smells of the blend for the rest of the session, and so, faintly, do you.

  3. 03

Ten quiet minutes afterwards, water, and a small bottle of the same blend to take home if you would like one.

Questions

Aromatherapy massage, answered

Which oils do you use?

A small, honest range: lavender, chamomile, vetiver, cedarwood, sweet orange, bergamot, rosemary and frankincense, blended into warm sweet almond or grapeseed oil. The blend is mixed for you at the start of the session, and I will tell you what is in it.

Is aromatherapy massage safe in pregnancy?

Several essential oils are not suitable in pregnancy, so tell me when you book. From the second trimester I can work with a pregnancy-safe blend and side-lying positioning; in the first trimester I would suggest waiting.

Is it a deep massage?

No — light to medium pressure is the point. If you want something worked hard, book deep tissue; if you want to switch off, this is the one.
