What is swedish massage?

Swedish massage is the classic full-body relaxation massage: long gliding strokes towards the heart, kneading and gentle rocking with warm oil at light-to-medium pressure. It is chosen for stress, poor sleep and general tension rather than for one specific knot. At Your Masseuse in Paddington W2 it is booked by WhatsApp, done by a single therapist, and costs £80 for 30 minutes (45 min £100, 60 min £120, 90 min £170).

Swedish massage is the one everybody thinks they have had, and almost nobody has had done properly. The technique itself is simple — long gliding strokes towards the heart, kneading, gentle rocking, warm oil, moderate pressure across the whole body. What makes it work is the pace, and pace is exactly what gets cut when a studio is running eight guests a day.

I do it slowly. The first strokes are almost too slow; by the tenth minute your breathing has changed without you deciding to change it. Somewhere around the forty-minute mark most guests stop tracking time altogether, and the last fifteen minutes — the ones a fifty-minute “hour” quietly removes — are where the actual rest happens.

It is the right session when the problem is the week rather than one muscle: shallow sleep, a jaw you keep clenching, the feeling of being switched on since Monday. It is also the right first massage if you have not had one in years and want to be eased back in.

The session

How a swedish session goes

  1. 01

A few minutes of conversation first — anything sore, anything you would rather I avoided, how deep you like it. Then you undress to your comfort level and settle under a towel on a warmed table.

  2. 02

The massage moves in one continuous arc: back, shoulders and neck, then legs, arms and hands, then a slow finish on the scalp. You stay covered apart from the area I am working on. The oil is warm, the room is quiet, and nobody is going to ask you how your day was.

  3. 03

Afterwards you get ten minutes to come back to the room, a glass of water, and no rush to the door. Most people sleep unusually well that night.

Questions

Swedish massage, answered

What is the pressure like?

Light to medium by default — enough to work the muscle, never enough to brace against. If you like it firmer, say so at the start and I will work deeper; if you want something genuinely deep, book deep tissue instead.

Is Swedish massage good for stress?

It is the classic for a reason. Slow, rhythmic pressure across the whole body lowers heart rate and switches the nervous system out of its daytime mode. Most guests describe the effect as feeling “switched off” for the first time in weeks.

Thirty, sixty or ninety minutes?

Thirty minutes is a proper back, neck and shoulders session. Sixty is the complete classic. Ninety lets me spend real time on the legs, feet and scalp instead of passing through, and the last half hour is where the deepest rest tends to happen. If it is your first visit, sixty is a good place to start.
